How it works
The calculator starts from a price range for your piano and distance, then adds each extra: stairs at each end, elevator handling, tight access and storage. It adds the low ends together and the high ends together, so the range widens as the move gets more complex. That's how quotes behave too.
Two things it can't see: your region (big-city moves with walk-ups and building rules run higher) and whether a crane or hoist is needed. If a grand has to come out through a window, add about $500–$1,500 or more. The cost guide explains each figure and lists its sources.

Why do stairs cost so much?
Each flight needs more people, more time and more risk. Movers usually charge per flight or per step, at each end of the move. A turning staircase or a long exterior stair can cost more than the move itself. Pianos and stairs.
Is a grand piano more expensive to move than an upright?
Yes. Grands cost more because the crew removes the legs, pedal lyre and lid, straps the body on its side to a padded skid board, and usually needs three or more people.
